First Visiting Scholar for SC-UM Islamic Finance Collaboration
The Securities Commission (SC) is pleased to announce Professor Mervyn K Lewis as the first visiting scholar for the SC-University of Malaya (UM) Islamic finance collaboration. Professor Lewis is currently the Professor of Banking and Finance in the School of Commerce at the University of South Australia.

The collaboration, pursuant to a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed last year between the SC and UM, will bring in eminent international scholars who will be attached with UM. The visiting scholars will deliver a series of lectures, assist in academic research as well as provide consultation on dissertations and thesis by post graduate students. In addition, they will also participate in programmes organized by the SC.

“We are very pleased to have Professor Mervyn Lewis as our first Visiting Scholar. We are confident that, with his knowledge and expertise, Professor Lewis will be able to stimulate intellectual discourse and encourage various research capabilities, thereby developing the talent pool and the body of knowledge in the area of Islamic finance,” says Dato’ Sri Zarinah Anwar, Chairman of the SC.

As part of this visiting scholar programme, the SC will be hosting a public lecture by Professor Lewis entitled “An Islamic Economic Perspective on the Global Financial Crisis” on Thursday 16 April 2009 (4.00pm – 5.30pm) at the Securities Commission, Bukit Kiara, Kuala Lumpur.

At the public lecture, Professor Lewis will share his views on the economic crises from the Islamic finance perspective. He will touch on excessive credit, churning of credit derivatives, the vicious credit cycle and how they caused the global financial crisis.
