SIDC seminar to promote innovative solutions for the Islamic capital market

The Islamic capital market has grown to a substantial size and is today an important and useful component of the global capital market. The challenges for the Islamic capital market have now become so intense that it needs to innovate in order to remain attractive to investors’ needs and risk appetite.

Recognising the need to constantly adapt to the competitive economic environment, the Securities Industry Development Centre (SIDC), the training and education arm of the Securities Commission, will organise a seminar to examine the use of Islamic financial instruments and discuss how such instruments can help boost the equity and bond markets.

The seminar entitled, “Islamic Investments & Financing Instruments – Innovative Solutions for the Capital Market” will be held on 3 & 4 October 2005 at the Securities Commission in Bukit Kiara, Kuala Lumpur. This seminar will give an overview on the recent trends and developments in the global and domestic Islamic capital market. It will also touch on the basic underlying principles of Islamic finance theories and Islamic commercial law, as well as its legal and regulatory framework.

Other interesting topics that will be discussed include investment strategies for selecting syariah-approved securities, syariah index, understanding the requirements of the Islamic Securities Guidelines, tax neutrality and incentives, and Islamic REITs. Participants will also gain insights from case study discussions at the end of the seminar and obtain timely and up-to-date capital market information and updates from decision makers and policy formulators.

The seminar is targeted at merchant bankers, asset and fund managers, registered Syariah advisers, legal and tax advisers, research analysts, investment advisers, corporate finance managers, as well as academicians. Other market participants and members of the public are also encouraged to attend. The seminar is SIDC CPE-accredited and carries 10 CPE points
