The Scholar in Residence Programme is a joint initiative between the Securities Commission Malaysia (SC) and the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies (OCIS), and is an outcome of the annual SC-OCIS Roundtable which is the flagship event under the collaboration between the SC and OCIS that started in 2010. The Roundtable in 2011 resolved that an initiative dedicated to research on contemporary issues in Islamic finance be introduced, which led to the establishment of the Scholar in Residence Programme in 2012. The first Visiting Fellow under the Programme was Dr Amir Shaharuddin of Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia with his research titled “Harmonising Shariah Rulings in Islamic Finance: Issues, Ways and Challenges”. The second and current Visiting Scholar is Dr Valentino Cattelan of the University of Rome Tor Vergata who is conducting research on “Performing God’s Will in market economy: Islamic contract law, fiqh and the law of Islamic finance”.
Applicants and nominees for the Visiting Fellowship under the Scholar in Residence Programme must be specialists in Islamic finance and/or a closely related discipline, preferably with practical experience of policy-making with an international or comparative component. Applicants and nominees must be able to demonstrate competence to conduct independent academic research.

The successful applicant will be expected to conduct research relating to the development of Islamic finance on a topic of contemporary relevance to this field, and to participate in a range of academic activities at OCIS. The tenure of the Fellowship is for one academic year. The Visiting Fellow will have membership of the Centre and enjoy full access to its facilities including shared office accommodation. A grant of 10,000 pound sterling (£10,000) will be made to contribute towards covering the Visiting Fellow’s living, travel and incidental research expenses.
