Kuala Lumpur, 15 May 1996

The Securities Commission (SC) will be embarking on its educational tour to the Northern states of Kedah and Penang, in its mission to promote and regulate a fair, efficient, secure and transparent securities and futures markets in Malaysia.

The roadshow, led by the SC Chairman, Dato’ Dr. Mohd. Munir Abdul Majid and his management team, will kick off in Alor Setar on 24 May to educate the stockbrokers and retail investors before moving on to Penang the following day to address fellow corporate leaders, bankers, stockbrokers, fund managers and retail investors in the state.

As ambitioned by SC in its previous roadshows, SC wishes to not only highlight to the participants of the roadshow on its regulatory responsibility, but to emphasize more on its developmental role to create a stronger and knowledgeable investor base; to inform the public of the need for deep, liquid, transparent and efficient markets; to instil awareness of the variety of products available to meet different financing needs and also risk profiles.

Since the overall objective of the roadshow is to educate the public as well as market participants in understanding the Malaysian capital market, several enforcement and developmental issues related to the securities industry will be raised.

This, SC hopes to achieve through presentations of the following topics:

In Alor Setar
  • SC’s Responsibilities towards Investors
  • Overview on Unit Trusts
  • Your Rights and Responsibilities as an Investor
  • Understanding Call Warrants

In Penang
  • Role and Functions of SC
  • Going Public
  • Corporate Governance
  • Asset Management in Malaysia
  • Issues and Challenges.

From time to time, SC will continue to develop as well as to enhance similar educational programme to reach out to other market players within the country.
