SC, BURSA MALAYSIA TO HOST CORPORATE GOVERNANCE WEEK 2010
24 June 2010   |   Kuala Lumpur
Working towards CG excellence among listed companies

The Securities Commission Malaysia and Bursa Malaysia will host the annual Corporate Governance Week (CG Week) from 28 June to 2 July 2010 to further promote good corporate governance practices among public listed companies (PLCs).

The 2010 CG Week, the second in the series, provides a major platform for regulators and capital market practitioners to deliberate on various key CG issues such as the evolving roles of boards, effectiveness of independent directors, boardroom quality, board oversight over management and risk management. Themed “Towards Corporate Governance Excellence”, the CG Week will feature prominent CG experts and speakers from Malaysia, Hong Kong and Singapore.

SC Chairman, Tan Sri Zarinah Anwar and Bursa Malaysia Chairman, Tun Mohamed Dzaiddin Bin Haji Abdullah will launch the CG Week at Bursa Malaysia on 28 June 2010. Tan Sri Zarinah will also be delivering a keynote address at the launch.

Dato Dr. Nik Ramlah Mahmood, Managing Director and Executive Director of Enforcement of the SC, said, “The CG week could not have come at a better time. The participation of regulators, key market institutions and professional associations in the CG week underscores the continuing need for collaborative efforts to strengthen corporate governance. Recent developments have again brought to the fore issues such as board accountabilities as well as the role of advisors, auditors and other professionals. It is hoped that directors of PLCs will make every effort to attend the events organised throughout the CG Week 2010.”

Ms. Selvarany Rasiah, Chief Regulatory Officer of Bursa Malaysia said, “Corporate governance is paramount to listed companies and the broader economic development. This is even more important at the present time as stakeholders and investors demand company directors to be more transparent, practise sound governance and not merely pay lip service to compliance statements. Therefore, promoting the best practices via the CG Week together with regulators and CG experts is needful as we believe this endeavour will provide practical insights into embracing the best practices in CG.”

The CG Week has also drawn a strong participation and support from various industry and professional groups. They comprise Suruhanjaya Syarikat Malaysia (SSM), the Audit Oversight Board, the Minority Shareholders Watchdog Group (MSWG), Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), Malaysian Alliance of Corporate Directors (MACD), Malaysian Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators (MAICSA), Malaysian Institute of Integrity, Institute of Internal Auditors Malaysia (IIAM), Malaysian Institute of Corporate Governance (MICG) and the Malaysian Institute of Accountants. Participation at this week-long event is open only to directors of public listed companies and is aimed at providing directors with opportunities to familiarise, debate and discuss various corporate governance issues.
