As Vice-Chairman of the EMC, Dato' Zarinah will work together with the EMC Chairman Guillermo Larrain (of Chile) in leading the group in discussing key regulatory issues and challenges that are relevant to emerging market jurisdictions, with a view to developing international guidance and best practices to regulate the capital market.

"I am honoured to be elected as the Vice-Chairman of the EMC. The SC has over the years played a substantive role in the development of international regulatory standards. I look forward to working with fellow regulators in enhancing the standards of capital market regulation and strengthening the international financial architecture," said Dato' Zarinah Anwar.

Greg Tanzer, Secretary-General of IOSCO said, "I am delighted that Zarinah Anwar has been elected as the Vice-Chairman of the EMC. Zarinah's appointment brings to the EMC strong leadership skills, and demonstrates the valuable contribution that she and the SC Malaysia have made to IOSCO."

Dato' Zarinah is also Chairman of the ASEAN Capital Markets Forum, a grouping of the chairmen of ASEAN securities regulators, since 2006.

IOSCO is the world's most important international cooperative forum for securities regulatory agencies and its members regulate more than 90 percent of the world's securities markets. As the leading international policy forum for securities regulators, IOSCO plays a key role in setting the international standards for securities regulation, identifying issues affecting global markets, and making recommendations in meeting those challenges.

The IOSCO Annual Conference, which took place from 26-29 May 2008, brought together the world's securities regulators and members of the international financial community for a series of high level meetings and discussions.

A key outcome of the conference was the publication of a report on Credit Rating Agencies, and a report on the underlying causes of the subprime crisis and its implications for capital markets.

The conference, which attracted over 500 senior delegates from more than 100 countries, was hosted by the Autorité des marchés financiers of France. It was inaugurated by the French Minister of the Economy, Industry and Employment, Christine Lagarde.
