Ms. Chua scored a winner with her research paper entitled "Market Expectation's on Earnings and Stock Returns in Malaysia". According to Ms. Chua, the primary objective of her research was to study the effects of expected earnings in determining stock price movements at the Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange (KLSE). Ms. Chua's research focused on determining the proxy for market expectation on earnings and testing the effect of unexpected earnings on abnormal returns.
The SC Capital Market Award was created in 1995 to promote quality research relating to the Malaysian capital market amongst postgraduate students from local universities. The award is held annually and requires postgraduate students to submit their semester thesis/ working paper on topics such as finance, securities law and financial economics.
The SC Chairman, Dato' Dr. Mohd. Munir Abdul Majid delivered the keynote address on "Bridging the Gap Between Academia and the Capital Market". Apart from stressing the significance of human resource development especially with regards to formation of right attitudes of mind, inculcation of right ethical and moral values, the SC Chairman also emphasised specific skills requirements in the securities industry and the need to prepare university students for the derivatives industry.
"Job skills and human resource requirements in the financial services industry in the past were fairly simple and more straightforward. With the growth and expansion of the financial services industry, specialist skills are now demanded in stockbroking, banking, insurance, fund management and investment advisory businesses," the SC Chairman highlighted in his keynote address.
About 200 academic staff, students from various institutes of higher learning in the northern region, attended the ceremony which saw the Vice-Chancellor of Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), Professor Dato' Dr. Ishak Tambi Kechik and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) of Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM), Associate Professor Dr. Mohd. Salleh Haji Din among the guests at the ceremony.
