According to the SC’s Health and Safety Week Committee Chairman and Company’s Medical Adviser, Dr Amar Singh, this event, which is in its seventh year, is aimed at “raising awareness, providing information and practical advice and encouraging activities which have a positive impact in the workplace.”
“Recent news reports have highlighted the poor eating habits of Malaysians. Here at the SC, we encourage our staff to adopt a healthy lifestyle which translates into higher productivity and a good working environment,” said Dr Amar.
In a bid to encourage nutritious eating habits, staff were treated to a healthy breakfast menu throughout the week comprising of among others, sandwiches, cereal, whole meal bread, salads, fresh low-fat milk, fruit juices, eggs, porridge, yogurt and an assortment of fresh fruits.
The National Kidney Foundation (NKF) conducted a health screening exercise programme which included blood pressure measurement, urinalysis, body mass index, waist circumference, blood sugar and cholesterol levels, followed by a counselling session. According to Dr Amar, the SC staff are also enthusiastic supporters of the Blood Bank.
Two first aid training sessions were conducted for staff. There were also talks on Nutrition by Dutch Lady Milk Berhad, Cancer awareness by Majlis Kanser Negara (MAKNA) and a talk on Fitness by “Curve”. To round off the week, a Defensive Driving talk was also organized.
“We are pleased that that this annual campaign has had the enthusiastic support of staff. People in the SC are very much aware of the importance of keeping fit and this includes ensuring having a balanced diet, eating healthily and exercise. We are hopeful that these good habits are also being practiced by their family members”, Dr Amar said.
