Welcome Remarks by Datuk Syed Zaid Albar
Chairman, Securities Commission Malaysia
Launch of Dana Penjana Nasional

27 August 2020

Assalamu’alaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh and a very good morning to all.

Yang Berhormat Tengku Dato’ Sri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz, Minister of Finance;
Yang Berbahagia Dato’ Asri Hamidon, Secretary General of Treasury;
Distinguished guests;
Ladies and gentlemen;

1.

I welcome all of you to the Securities Commission Malaysia (SC). We are indeed very honoured to host the launching of Dana Penjana at the Securities Commission here this morning.

2. Today's occasion demonstrates of the government's commitment to develop the private market ecosystem. It is also a recognition of its potential to transform the Malaysian economy for the betterment of current and future generations.
3. The growth of risk financing, such as venture capital (VC) and private equity (PE), is essential to inspire innovation and develop entrepreneurship. These are the much-needed prerequisites for a more dynamic private sector to spearhead our next stage of economic growth.
4. The availability of risk capital, alongside a vibrant ecosystem that supports high growth firms adds value to, and enhances intermediation of our domestic savings. In addition, it builds resiliency and promotes diversity in the domestic financial system.
5. As of 2019, committed investments through registered VCs and PEs amount to RM 6 billion. While relatively nascent in comparison to developed markets, this segment exhibits great promise.
6. Given its potential and importance, private markets has been a major focus area for the SC over the years. As a representative of the Malaysian Venture Capital and Private Equity Development Council (MVCDC), we are supportive of public and private efforts to accelerate the transformation of Malaysia's private market ecosystem.
7. By leveraging private sector know-how, Dana Penjana has the ability to serve as a model, to enable effective allocation of funds towards new growth areas that the country needs.
8. This model of public-private partnership will no doubt add energy and momentum, to our domestic capital market, and in the longer term, it will uplift the business ecosystem and contribute significantly towards the country's economic prosperity.
9. On that note, it is my distinct pleasure to invite, Yang Berhormat Tengku Dato' Sri Zafrul, the Minister of Finance to deliver his keynote address.

Thank you.
