Discovering Tomorrow’s ASEAN
18 November 2010   |   Kuala Lumpur
Malaysia will host the 7th ASEAN Finance Ministers’ Investor Seminar (AFMIS) on 30 November 2010.

Malaysia’s Prime Minister, YAB Dato’ Sri Mohd Najib Tun Abdul Razak, will present the keynote address at this one-day Seminar which is a high-level platform aimed at promoting ASEAN as an attractive investment destination and the branding of ASEAN as an asset class.

Malaysia’s Minister of Finance II, YB Dato’ Seri Ahmad Husni Mohamad Hanadzlah will host his counterparts from the ASEAN member countries, including HE Kong Vibol, Secretary of State, Cambodia; HE Agus Martowardojo, Finance Minister of Indonesia; HE Somdy Duangdy, Finance Minister of Laos; HE Cesar V Purisima, Secretary of Finance, Philippines; HE Tharman Shanmugaratnam, Finance Minister of Singapore and HE Korn Chatikavanij, Finance Minister of Thailand.

The Secretary General of ASEAN, HE Dr Surin Pitsuwan is confirmed to attend.

Given the shift in global economic growth prospects to the region post the global financial crisis, this year’s AFMIS is aptly themed, “Discovering Tomorrow’s ASEAN” and focuses on the opportunities that ASEAN financial markets have to offer the global investing community.

The 7th AFMIS builds on the success of previous years’ seminars which were traditionally held in major global financial centres. The Kuala Lumpur event, the first held in Malaysia, is expected to bring approximately 300 leading regional and international capital market players, investors and intermediaries to one of the fastest growing regions in the world today to engage in dialogue with the ASEAN Finance Ministers. The ten-member bloc represents a market of 600 million people or 8.8% of the world’s population. In 2010, its combined nominal GDP had grown to USD $1.8 trillion. ASEAN collectively ranks as the 9th largest economy in the world and the 3rd largest in Asia in terms of nominal GDP.

The Seminar will include an interactive Ministerial Panel discussion on the region’s growth opportunities and competitive strengths in building the ASEAN Economic Community by 2015. Breakout Sessions scheduled for the afternoon will provide participants added opportunities to interface more closely with the country delegations on specific issues.

This year’s investment seminar is co-organised by the Ministry of Finance Malaysia and the Securities Commission Malaysia
