Kuala Lumpur, 29 September 2008

The Securities Commission (SC) has approved the application of Japan Asia Investment Co. Ltd (JAIC), one of the largest venture capital companies (VCCs) in Japan, to undertake venture capital activities in Malaysia.

The registration of JAIC marks the entry of the first foreign VCC in Malaysia. Currently there are 57 VCCs registered with the SC as at 31 August 2008.

SC Chairman Dato’ Zarinah Anwar said, “The presence of foreign VCCs in the local venture capital scene will add greater depth and breadth to the pool of players within the industry.”

Malaysian companies and entrepreneurs may leverage on JAIC’s networks and know-how, to increase their skill sets and pursue growth opportunities. With over 15 years experience in VC investments, JAIC has a globally-linked organization that pursues investments in Japan, Asia and the United States.

JAIC’s entry into Malaysia also increases the pool of private equity funding available in Malaysia. Apart from VC investments, JAIC is also an active player in private-equity-related businesses such as buyout investments, restructuring financing, and secondary investments.

JAIC was established in 1981 by the Japan Association of Corporate Executives and became an independent VCC in 1989. JAIC is listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange and currently manages USD1.4 billion of investment funds across 11 countries including China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam and the USA.
