Keynote Address at Closing Ceremony TVET Development Programme @ UNIKL
Speaker: Datuk Seri Abdul Jalil Hamid, Executive Director, Strategic Communications and Chairman’s Office, Securities Commission Malaysia
Location: Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UniKL)
Delivered: 1 December 2024

Distinguished guests,
Esteemed partners from Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UniKL),
Members of the National TVET Council Secretariat,
Ladies and gentlemen.

Full Speech

  1. As we gather to mark this milestone, we celebrate not just the conclusion of this phase, but the beginning of a transformative journey for many individuals and the wider TVET ecosystem in Malaysia.
  2. This programme, a collaboration between the Securities Commission Malaysia and the National TVET Council Secretariat, represents a forward-looking step towards enhancing the capabilities and opportunities available to TVET students, recent graduates, and teaching staff.
  3. Over the next three years, from 2024 to 2026, this initiative will focus on fostering financial literacy, employability, and entrepreneurship within the capital market sector.
  4. Why does this matter? The role of TVET institutions, like UniKL, is crucial in shaping a skilled and capable workforce.
  5. However, we must go beyond traditional skills training to equip our students with the knowledge and competencies necessary to thrive in a rapidly evolving economy.
  6. This programme is designed to bridge that gap by aligning education with the demands of the capital market and local industries, preparing students to step confidently into the future.

Goals and Objectives

  1. The goals of the TVET Development Programme reflect our commitment to ensuring that no one is left behind in Malaysia’s journey toward economic growth and financial resilience.
  2. Firstly, practical knowledge and employability - It is often said that education is not just about filling minds with facts but about preparing individuals to navigate the challenges of life.
  3. Through this programme, we aim to provide TVET students with practical skills that bridge the gap between theory and application. By understanding industry expectations and honing their abilities, these students will be more competitive in the job market and better equipped to secure meaningful employment upon graduation.
  4. Secondly, entrepreneurship and financial literacy - Entrepreneurship is a powerful tool for economic empowerment, especially when coupled with sound financial literacy.
  5. This programme empowers students and graduates to think like entrepreneurs, equipping them with the skills to start and manage their own businesses. Beyond that, it instills the financial acumen needed to make informed decisions, plan for the future, and build resilience against financial challenges.
  6. Thirdly, industry alignment - To remain relevant, education must evolve alongside industry demands. By tailoring educational content to the needs of the capital market and local industries, this initiative not only enhances the employability of graduates but also drives economic growth. When education and industry are aligned, we foster an environment that attracts investments, creates jobs, and empowers communities.

Acknowledgment and Future Collaboration

  1. At this juncture, I must take a moment to express our deepest gratitude to our partners, particularly UniKL. Your unwavering support, dedication, and collaboration have been instrumental in bringing this programme to life. The success we celebrate today is a testament to the power of partnerships and shared vision.
  2. As we move forward, the SC is excited to continue this collaboration with our partners. Over the next three years, we will work together to assess the effectiveness of the programme, refine its components, and ensure it delivers its intended impact. Our ultimate goal is to create lasting benefits for students, empowering them to seize opportunities and build bright futures.

Expected Outcomes

  1. The anticipated outcomes of this initiative reflect our ambitious vision:
  2. One, financial literacy and employability - By 2026, this programme will have reached 600 TVET students and graduates, providing them with a comprehensive understanding of financial literacy and entrepreneurship. These skills are not just tools for personal success but catalysts for broader societal progress.
  3. Two, train-the-trainer initiative - One of the most impactful components of this programme is the “Be Money Wise” or Bijak Mengurus Wang for Aspiring Entrepreneurs Workshop. Over 150 participants will be trained to become effective educators in financial literacy, amplifying the programme’s reach and sustainability.
  4. Three, entrepreneurship development - Through initiatives such as the Business Acumen, Start-ups & Entrepreneurship (BASE) Bootcamp, participants will gain practical insights into launching and managing businesses. These hands-on experiences hopes ignite a spirit of innovation and resilience among students, preparing them to contribute meaningfully to the economy.
  5. These outcomes are not merely statistics; they represent the transformation of lives, the empowerment of individuals, and the strengthening of communities.

A Message to the Students

  1. To the students here today, I want to commend you for taking this step in your personal and professional development.
  2. Your commitment to learning and growth is what inspires initiatives like this. I encourage you to take the lessons you’ve learned here and apply them in your lives and careers.
  3. Remember that the skills you’ve gained—whether in financial literacy, entrepreneurship, or employability—are the foundations upon which you can build for a better future.
  4. You are the future of Malaysia, and the opportunities before you are boundless. Whether you choose to enter the workforce, start your own business, or pursue further education, know that you have the power to shape your destiny.

Closing Thanks

  1. As we close this chapter, I would like to once again extend our heartfelt thanks to UniKL for your partnership. Your commitment to empowering students and fostering innovation has been pivotal in ensuring the success of this initiative.
