Tan Sri Dr. Munir Majid served as the founding Executive Chairman of the Securities Commission Malaysia, from 1 March 1993 to 28 February 1999. Holding a Ph.D. in Economics, he brought private-sector acumen from leading CIMB to establish the SC.
During his two terms, he unified fragmented market oversight, championed the multi-phase transition from merit-based to disclosure-based regulation, and laid foundations for debt derivatives and Islamic capital markets. Critically, he steered Malaysia’s capital market through the 1997-1998 Asian Financial Crisis.
