SC Hosts Inaugural ASEAN Regulatory Sustainability Summit in Collaboration with Durham University

Durham, United Kingdom, 11 September 2026

The Securities Commission Malaysia (SC) held the inaugural ASEAN Regulatory Sustainability Summit in collaboration with the Centre for Sustainable Development Law and Policy, Durham University on 9 September 2026.

Supported by the Asian Development Bank, the closed-door dialogue included over 40 participants comprising senior policy makers and capital market regulators from the ASEAN Capital Markets Forum (ACMF)1, academics and leading industry experts at the frontier of new ideas and market practices from the UK, US and the Asia Pacific.

Building on the ACMF Action Plan 2026-20302, the Summit represents an important initiative in advancing thought leadership to discuss the most pressing sustainability challenges facing the ASEAN region and the wider international financial community.

Under the theme ‘Building Resilience while Navigating Global Shifts’, discussions centred on how relevant stakeholders can build resilience in the face of emerging economic and sustainability pressures.

The Summit explored ways to foster country, market and corporate resilience, how private, concessional and philanthropic capital can be mobilised to finance climate adaptation and transition, as well as the evolving architecture of voluntary carbon markets with a focus on strengthening their financial market integrity.

SC Chairman Dato’ Mohammad Faiz Azmi said that, “Resilience is the balance between the risks we are exposed to and our preparedness for them. This gap is precisely where capital market and regulators can and must act on.”

“I hope this Summit translates into meaningful action across ASEAN capital markets. ASEAN recognises that resilience is not a commitment reserved for good times, but one that can sustain us even in difficult circumstances,” he said.

Professor Petra Minnerop, Associate-Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Sustainability) and Founding Director of the Durham Centre for Sustainable Development Law and Policy, Durham University said, “Durham University is striving to implement sustainability across teaching, research, impact and engagement. We deeply appreciate our partnership with the ASEAN capital markets regulators and the Securities Commission Malaysia, and our international collaboration, including across the industry and the financial sector, to support the implementation of the UN SDGs through sustainable development projects.”
