1 July 2009   |   Kuala Lumpur
The Securities Commission Malaysia (SC) gave out scholarships yesterday to nine of the brightest students in Malaysia. This scholarship award is part of ongoing SC efforts to develop the Malaysian capital market talent pool, and will enable these new scholars to pursue their studies in key fields.

The nine deserving recipients of the scholarships are Chai Kien Poon, John Ling Chee Ern, Lee Thean Ming, Mohd Arif Ismail, Muhammad Azim Che Mokhtar, Noah Azlan Ngah, Nur Syahira Mahmud, Raja Shah Irshad Raja Abdul Halim and Sara Irina Md. Rijaluddin. They will be pursuing their studies in various fields relevant to the capital market.

“I am honored to have been selected as one of the recipients for this award,” said Raja Shah Irshad. “It is exciting to be able to continue my studies in the UK and to have the opportunity to work with the SC once I graduate.”

The recipients were selected from a strong pool of applicants nationwide. They were rigorously assessed on a wide range of criteria, including their academic track record, co-curricular participation, leadership qualities, communication skills, interpersonal capabilities, personality, self-confidence and family background.

Given out for the thirteenth year, the scholarships cover the students’ living subsistence allowance, tuition fees and other related fees for pre-university, local degree and overseas degrees in various disciplines such as law, economics, finance, business and management.

The SC strongly believes in nurturing young talents who will someday contribute significantly to the growth and development of the Malaysian capital market. The SC Chairman Tan Sri Zarinah Anwar said, “Malaysia has always needed talent to realise our vision, and never more so than today; for it is the talent we develop that will help us through these challenging times.”

The SC Managing Director Dato’ Dr Nik Ramlah Nik Mahmood presented the scholarships to the nine recipients in a simple ceremony at the SC.
