MEDIA RELEASE

Kuala Lumpur, 30 October 2023

The Securities Commission Malaysia (SC) today launched the Shariah Mentorship Programme, a targeted, first-of-its-kind mentorship initiative aimed at building a sustainable talent pipeline of Shariah professionals in the Islamic capital market (ICM).

The multi-year programme administered by ISRA Consulting, a wholly-owned subsidiary of INCEIF University and SC’s strategic partner, focuses on developing capable Shariah professionals with increased level of professionalism, technical competencies and regulatory expertise.

The SC Chairman Dato’ Seri Dr. Awang Adek Hussin said, “This initiative is part of the SC’s continuous efforts to build an innovative and competitive ICM, with talent development as a key enabler for broadening the breadth and depth of Malaysia’s ICM.”

“The SC’s partnership with ISRA Consulting reinforces our commitment to enhance the capabilities and abilities of ICM practitioners in Shariah governance, particularly in strengthening entry requirements and dedicated learning programmes for Shariah advisers,” he said.

He added that this programme will help participants gain relevant knowledge and technical competencies whilst supporting ICM’s growth in Malaysia.

The first cohort of 15 successful applicants, will undergo a two-month intensive classroom learning and a six-month internship placement at selected organisations. Participants will also receive a monthly allowance throughout the programme, supported by the Capital Market Development Fund (CMDF).

Throughout the two-month classroom learning, participants will also receive structured guidance and learnings from SC’s Shariah Advisory Council (SAC) members and subject matter experts in the industry to ensure they are well equipped for Shariah advisory roles.

Overall, more than 40 Shariah professionals and fresh graduates are expected to participate in the programme, that will run for three consecutive years with each cohort consisting of 15 participants.

The first batch saw an overwhelming response from the Shariah fraternity, with close to 300 applications received from both fresh graduates and experienced hires.
